Gay Goth Anthems?

topic posted Wed, June 13, 2007 - 10:44 AM by  R
I know of some homo punk songs about being gay (the only good one is "I Kill Everything I Fuck!" Ha!) but I can't think of any real gay goth songs. "Black Leather" by Nightmares in Wax might be the only gay goth song I can think of, and that's not really goth I guess, there's just something about Pete Burns that always seemed pretty goth to me. Are there any others?

While not gay-specific, I always thought Peter Murphy's "All Night Long", Killing Joke's "Love Like Blood", and Christian Death's "Believers of the Unpure" were homo-referential enough. Are Coil considered goth? What about anything by the Smiths? Or is the sun shining out of behinds too pop?

You know I've never been able to understand what he was saying on Love Like Blood. Yeah I guess Christian Death and Smiths stuff count cause they have gay singers.

We must play our lives like soldiers in the field
But life is short i'm running faster all the time
Strength and beauty destined to decay
So cut the rose in full bloom

'til the fearless come and the act is done
A love like blood, a love like blood

Everyday through all frustration and despair
Love and hate fight with burning hearts
'til legends live and man is god again
(and self-preservation rules the day no more)

We must dream of promised lands and fields
        That never fade in season
As we move towards no end we learn to die
Red tears are shed on grey

I always thought it was "'til the FEELINGS come and the act is done" and I associated it with a kind of violent sexuality, kind of like anal penetration. Reading the lyrics in detail I guess it's not so homo-referential like I thoughteded....

Another one I thought of was "Headhunter" by Front242. All that talk about capturing men and "I'm looking for this man/To sell him to another man" always gave me the gay sexy. Well, that and pretty much anything by Front242 and Nitzer Ebb gave me the gay sexies. There's a Skinny Puppy song I used to think was kind of homoerotic (if that's possible....) but I can't remember what it is right now. I'd have to dig out the CDs. It wasn't "Warlock", one of their early tracks. Oh, Gene Loves Jezebel had a song about loving each other a whole bunch.

Yeah Pleasure Boys and DEFINITELY Nitzer Ebb for sure, and what about "Stephen" by Gene Loves Jezebel? That song is straight up homo!

"When Stephen smiles my heart just seems to grow
If only I could let that poor boy go
            Skinny body ...."

What's the Skinny Puppy song you were thinking of? By the way, I saw them last Saturday and I got stuck in an industrial boy pit during the encore of "Far to Frail" it was pretty nice.

I always thought "Boys" by Bauhaus was pretty gay.

"Features so fine, Rouge and eyeline
Things I fancy, Just like nancy

      Fashions alter, Often falter
Crypso's out now, No more fights now

      Make-up's taking, Lots of shaving
On my eyelash, You sure it don't clash

      Slim-line trousers, Facial powders
Flooding my mind, You sure there's no lines"

Depeche Mode may not be goth, but Never Let Me Down is gay as fuck. The Mission UK did an awesome cover of it, though, so that could work wonderfully =]

if we're including Depeche Mode here, nothing fits the bill quite like "Boys Say Go":

You don`t understand, this is in demand
And I think that I have to show you
Try to look inside, take me for a ride
In a day and a night get to know you

      Boys meet boys, get together
      Boys meet boys, live forever
Don`t say no, boys say go

I could run away if you need to stay
In the rain and the pain and the sorrow
I`m not very sure when you place it all
In the end it`s the same as tomorrow

Never Let Me Down is gay as fuck, not to mention two of their earlier songs: Boys Say Go and What's Your Name?

DEPECHE MODE were goth during SOME GREAT REWARD and "quintessentially" goth for BLACK CELEBRATION. MUSIC FOR THE MASSES had a lot of goth elements, but as for being gay, according to many of my peers over the years, there isn't a DP song that isn't gay. I mean Martin Gore wore patent leather miniskirts and leather harnesses during their live shows all the time, and for the album with the BOYS SAY GO song, Vince Clark was famously gay later becoming half of ERASURE. SMITHS were not goth, but a lot of goths liked them. Having been hard core SKINNY PUPPY fan for over 15 years, and having to put up with the goth-fag label for it, I've never understood how any of their songs could be considered gay. I'ld be interested to know which of their songs is being refered to in the previous post. Lets not forget that NITZER EBB is nothing more than an updated english version of DAF who are infamously gay.

Tainted Love by Soft Cell, would have to fit the bill. IMO it may be the most gay goth song ever.

I'll listen to my Skinny Puppy CDs this weekend and try to figure out which song it was for you.

I hate to disappoint, but apparently Vince Clarke is very much straight.

I agree with alot of what Adolf said, and have to say too I'm intrigued by the Skinny Puppy reference. I never got a gay vibe from them but Im curious to hear what song your talking about.
As for Tainted Love, I think the COIL cover of that song is much darker and gayer. It was even used in the soundtrack to Hustler White, in some crazy SM scene I think.
I've always asumed that Sisters of Mercy are straight, but then there is that weird cover of Dolly Partons' "Jolene".

      Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene,
I'm begging of you please don't take my man.
You could have your choice of men,
But I could never love again.
He's the only one for me, Jolene.

Oh yeah I forget about DAF "Let's play like we were brothers" hell yeah. Actually that other industrial band a;Grumh is really gay and have songs about gay sex and AIDS. I always thought Borghesia were pretty gay too. I guess a bunch of Soft Cell songs are gay too, My Secret Life, Seedy Films, Sex Dwarf ...

I've actually had a couple people tell me Depeche Mode are kind of homophobic which is think is pretty crazy. One really awesome night I was dancing with Martin Gore and Robert Smith at Club USA and Martin was FLAMING out all over the dancefloor like a fucking drag queen! I think Robert was embarrased to be seen with him! Ha! But I just could not believe Martin Gore is straight, and I've also heard a little bit of a womanizer, but these are all just rumors who knows.

In high school (which for me was a long time ago....) I knew someone who went to see Depeche Mode with a group of people, and he told me one of the guys in the group had sex backstage with Martin Gore after the show. He said Martin and that other guy are gay, and Dave Gahan and that other other guy are straight.

I always assumed Andrew Eldritch was gay, and Wayne Hussey as well. I met Wayne Hussey after a Mission UK gig once and my friend said he was totally giving me the googly eyes while I was talking to him. I assumed it was just the shrooms or something. And I always thought Peter Murphy was gay as well. The guys in Thrill Kill Kult were obviously gay (and I have a few stories about what freaks they are), and I assumed Nitzer Ebb were and I was hoping at least one of the three in Skinny Puppy were gay. Preferrably Nivek....

Weird, Martin Gore can't be totally gay cause I remember on the Black Celebration tour he was really trying to fuck my female friend Autumn. Maybe he'll just fuck anything! I think he's married with kids now. Same thing with Wayne Hussey. He was trying really hard to fuck my friend Mindy which I thought was weird cause I thought he was gay too. I know Andrew Eldritch dated Particia Morrison and that girl from Vicious Pink, but maybe he is bi too.

I mean you can almost never tell with these guys. Budgie and Siouxsie were married for years, but I swear he was hitting on me one time. It freaked me out.

But that guy Thomas Thorn from Thrill KIll can't be totally gay either cause my friend Jessica dated him for years. He used to beat her! But I'd be interested to hear your stories, ha! This conversation is hilarious to me.

            Fri, June 15, 2007 - 8:17 PM
Thorn must be the one who let this girl in Milwaukee we all knew blow him in the back of their dumpy van one time, and while she was blowing him he started punching her in the face. He told her gay friend (who I was friends with) afterward that he lets girls blow him but that he prefers guys or something like that.

Some guy in the Siouxsie tribe said that both Siouxsie and Budgie are bi. I always thought Steve Severin was gay....

I had a friend who told me that he was hanging out backstage at a SKINNY PUPPY show and that D. Goettel (the dead one) was really grooving on him. My friend is basically straight but said he was sure Dwyane was hitting on him. I'll ask him more details the next time I talk to him.

That was an instrumental intro to the first song on the second side of the REMISSION ep. I think the sampled quote is from one of the old DRACULA movies (but I'm not sure which one at the moment),....."Welcome to my house, I'm delighted you could come...." The instrumental intoduces the song ICEBREAKER. I love that intro. it has a very dark, gritty, submarine atmosphere and I wish it were a full length piece, but I can't see how it came across as "gay", unless you're maybe talking about how the title sounds like MAN-HOLE.

BTW---BRONSKI BEAT is most definitely NOT GOTH. but I loved them. I was suprised to find out recently that JIMMY SOMMERVILLE is still putting records out.

            Sun, June 24, 2007 - 8:40 AM
Just because the samples aren't about two guys trying to get it on with each other doesn't mean I couldn't have had gay associations with it.... The music seemed sleazy to me in that "bump and grind, doing the nasty" kind of way. This is the sample:

"Welcome to my house. I'm delighted you could come. I'm certain you will find your stay here most illuminating. Think of me as your unseen host, and believe that during your stay here I shall be with you in spirit. May you find the answer that you seek. It is here, I promise you. And now, auf Wiedersehen." - The Legend of Hell House

Being a confused gay teenager, I found underlying gay messages in a lot of things, such as the sample above. You seem to look at things as black and white, but since there was so little gay "goth" media available at that time I was always looking for grey areas.

And I would always call the track "Manwhore"....

                Mon, June 25, 2007 - 1:13 AM
I agree that that sample could be interpreted as "gay" if it was a man talking to a man, woman to woman, rock to rock. I'm not familar with that movie, although Bram Stoker's DRACULA has a very similar phrase; and I DO believe that that novel has powerful homoerotic overtones. I was not stating otherwise. IT IS AN "INSTRUMENTAL" PIECE OF MUSIC. In a similar fasion I could intepret it as bestial, mechanical, bloody, demonic, rough, mystical, christian, judaic, kabbalistic, nihilistic, satanic, a-sexual, etc,,,, I don't think of those possibilities as BLACK OR WHIT3. "manwhore"?

I wasn't getting aggro on you, calm down! But you did question my perceiving that song as gay, and you still seem to be questioning it, so I just want to keep calling you out on that. You are not the be all and end all expert on what other people think or what something is defined as. So let me get this, er, 'straight' --- in order for something to be classified as gay, according to your terms it must be a man talking to a man or a woman talking to a woman? That's, um, really limiting I guess. I must have skipped that chapter in the How to Be Gay handbook.... I've heard the track many times before, I know it's an instrumental. Instrumental music can't be perceived as (homo)erotic? I must have skipped that chapter in The Guide to Listening To and Appreciating Music... "French Kiss" (in its original version) was an instrumental, I'm sorry if I perceived that music in any way erotic to listen to. Same with "Diskomo". Or Rachmaninoff. First you tell me that an instrumental cannot be perceived as gay, then you go on to say that instrumentals can have many interpretations, so am I to assume that when it's my perception and it's black or white it's wrong, but you're allowed all the grey areas?

                  manwhore (n.) - a whore that's a man
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

                    Re: Gay Goth Anthems?

                    Mon, June 25, 2007 - 3:24 PM
Hey now don't put words in my mouth, ok. I NEVER said any of the things the way you state I did. Re-read my comments. I said "I agree" that it could be interpreted anyway you like. Just because I personally do not interpret the music as "gay" does not mean that you can't. I was only trying to understand where you were comming from.

"First you tell me that an instrumental cannot be perceived as gay" "Instrumental music can't be perceived as (homo)erotic?" where did I say or even imply such things? I actually find the track to be quite "sexy" in a "dark, gritty" demonic way. (my opinion)

I did say, from an "objective" perspective "but I can't see how it came across as "gay", unless you're maybe talking about how the title sounds like MAN-HOLE." I wasn't disagreeing with you here or trying to discredit your statement. I wasn't saying that it couldn't come across as gay. I was trying to start a dialogue to understand "Your" perception. You just got defensive, thinking I was being confrontational. Friend, I do not wish to be confrontational with you in any way. There is too much of that around these days.

"You are not the be all and end all expert on what other people think or what something is defined as." You are correct and I would never pretend to be such, and I never took that position in any of my comments.

Now you have a point concerning the definition of "Gay". The term TRANSGENDER is murky nomanclature. What defines "guy" or "girl" is nebulous these days, and my "limiting", (as you put it), the definition of Gay as "guy to guy/woman to woman" can be debated. However I was going by the tried and true understanding that Gay actually means Gay, Homosexual, Same-Sex attraction. Gay as a loose term to explain fancy, queer, effeminate, fey, odd, nonconformist or any other type of manneristic behaviour or speech is erroneous, IMO.

I formally apologize if you felt attacked in any way by my curiosity regarding your insight in this matter. :)

Thanks for mentioning "Black Leather". I agree. There's always been an inherent darkness to Ms Burns, even when she was churning out pop schlock. I also loved DOA's "What I Want", But the whole self-titled DOA album gets my vote. It remains some of the most wild, exhuberant, evocative music I've heard. "It's Been Hours Now" is, to me, simply brilliant.

Siouxsie's "We Hunger" makes me all moisty-panty, too. (Maybe cuz it reminds me of Saturday -nights -after bar -boy-hunting...)
