The image of Goth appeals to me, and makes me hard. It is so non-conforming I think is the attraction, and rebellious. Turns me on! Almost an evil look and appeal.

Re: Goth is Sexy
Fri, December 16, 2005 - 12:57 PMOK, I'll give you the "goth is sexy" part, but I think there's a lot more to being "goth" than just the way a person looks. (And I'm not trying to start an argument here, just giving my opinion.) I think being goth is a lifestyle, not a look. It's more than just looking like a vampire or whatever. When I was in my "goth" heydays back in middle and high school, I dressed a certain way and dyed my already black hair even blacker, but I also liked certain genres of music that went along with (and above and beyond just) 'dressing up', and I was also really into art and creative writing and sociology and psychology, and also the challenge to "normal" society that I posed in those days. And yes, I was really into vampires, too, but I think people associate being "goth" with liking vampires, and I don't think they're that necessarily connected at all. They're not mutually exclusive, but I think Stevie Nicks is "goth", and she's not a vampire-wannabe. At least I don't think she is...
I used to go to this underage "alternative" club night back in high school on Sunday nights, and you could always spot the girls (and boys) who didn't have school the following Monday and wanted to go out to a club because they would always wear whatever black clothes they had to try and fit in. (This was a few years before Nirvana, before being "alternative" became mainstream, and when people like me used to get harrassed all the time because of who we were.) They would be on the dancefloor telling each other how "goth" they looked, because to them being "goth" simply meant a look, i.e. wearing black clothes was all it meant to be goth or punk or whatever. They would go home and take the black clothes off and that was it. I would go home and the next day I would still wear the same type of clothes, I would still wear white make-up to make me look even paler than I already was, I would still listen to the same kind of music, and I would still be a target for people to call names. But I wouldn't have changed a thing, really. I have always considered myself to be an intelligent person, and if everyone else had a problem with the way I looked or acted or dared to be different than what society (and especially my parents) expected in my appearance, attitude, and behavior, then it was their narrow-mindedness that was the problem, not me.
Anyway, back in the day I would've been offended if you were attracted to me because of the way I looked (and I'm not saying you would've been attracted to me, since I was butt back then too, it's just a hypothetical). There were a few girls at my high school who liked me because I was "different", and that was exciting to them. I was nice to them, but I kind of resented being objectified that way for just the way I looked and what kind of opinion they had of me just because of that. I think I had more to offer than making them look "edgy" by hanging around them in the hallway for a minute. Although dressing like that was a huge part of who I was back then, I would've dressed more "normally" if it meant being able to listen to the music I was heavily into back then, and being able to do other creative things, and being able to challenge society in other ways. The "goth look" was probably the most disposable part of my life back then, even though it was a nice perk.
I guess I would still consider myself "goth", and not only because I'm still really pale and have dark hair. I still like all the music I loved back in high school, I still try to dress differently than other people (even though I wear a lot less all-black nowadays, and my tastes have shifted from Bogey's catalogs and thrift stores to designer labels), I still appreciate creative art and creative people and writing and dark films (yes, including Underworld and vampire movies), and I still like to get active in challenging society and what is considered acceptable and not acceptable in this country today. Only now I'm more mature about how I oppose society, and I'm in a better position being an "adult" to go about get involved in sociology and psychology. I look at these kids nowadays who idolize and emulate Marilyn Manson and who are considered the new "goths", and I giggle silently to myself (I don't want them to cut me...) about how easy it is for them these days.
Anyway, again, I wasn't trying to offend your posting, I was just giving my opinion on it. Anyone else care to weigh in? -
