How Goth Are You? Have fun with this!!

You know the drill- cut and paste- enter your thoughts, if you DARE, bwah-haa-haa! Most people are only interested in posting and not reading, anyway.

The only rules are: there are no wrong answers, and don’t slam your compatriots for their individuality.

1. What’s your favorite, distinctively obvious Goth quote?

"Anybody got a clove? I hate my parents, too."

2. Is your Goth affinity more about music, fashion, mindset, or all of the above?

All of the above. The mindset begat the others, and the music met the mindset and the fashion took its own course.

3. What was the first Goth song or band you ever identified with?

I think it was "Blue Water" by Fields of the Nephilim, maybe "Something Inside Me Has Died" by Kommunity FK, I can't remember. I was more into ‘noise’ back then. I liked The Sisters and The Cure, but it didn’t grab me as Goth back then. It was pop.

4. What is your favorite Goth/Horror novel?

"Drawing Blood" by Poppy Z Brite. Sure it's pulp, but it's gay-goth pulp. So I’m shallow…

5. Is your Goth musik of choice more inclined towards Dance, Industrial, Ethereal, Ambient, Punk, Metal…?

I like them all, depending how much fight has been beaten out of me in a given day. If I’m angry, it’s Punk or Metal, if I’m totally deceased it’s Ethereal, if it’s good times it’s anything with a beat.

6. If you’re a guy, how many times have you sported eyeliner in the last month, just because? (Halloween not included!)
*If you’re a girlfriend, what might you have sported to deviate from the ‘normal’ & effeminate?

At least 3-4 times each month I put on the eyeliner when I need an escape to the surrealism that is my tortured existence (oh, the drama!) Hey, it helps- and I don’t even need to see it- just enough to know it’s there.

7. Do you own a pair of “Frankenstein”, or elevator boots/shoes? How many pairs?

Yep, 1 pair. Great therapy.

8. Do you consider yourself an Artist, or a f*ckin’ work of art?
An artist of sorts, a work of art in the making, or rotting... not sure about that.

9. Is Marilyn Manson a poseur, or a reflection on the state of our current existence?

The poor dear, he doesn't even know how funny he is- but he has no need to care! I think he brought some great truths to light, and I think he is insightful, intelligent, though not very well grounded. He claims to be a staunch Republican. Yes, I heard him say it- it's true. I think that deep down there is an insane conscience at work. Time will tell.

10. How many days of the week are you in full black attire?

I wear black each and every day. The mutants at work get used to it. Eventually they stop asking stupid questions.

11. Is your Goth identity more about being unique, rebellious, fashionable, intentionally hideous (to be spiteful) comfortable, or perhaps a political or religious statement?

All of the above! I never chose this lifestyle, it chose ME. I am only being true to myself, and that’s pure, Baby! Okay, so I don’t subscribe to any ‘set of values’, really. That would be too constricting.

12. Ever tried Absinthe? Fake Absinthe? Chartreuse?

I’m very fond of Chartreuse, never tried the others or had the opportunity to.

13. Are you a full-time or part-time Goth, or perhaps a Goth ‘in spirit’? Maybe just into 'the scene"?

I’m a somewhat covert, yet full-time Goth. That is, I may be subtle but the ‘gothness’ is always evident in mindset and attire.

14. Do you think “Darkness” is evil?

No, but I think the idea of ‘darkness’ can be made to be evil. Darkness exists without intention in nature; I’m just drawn to it. I seek balance between the dark and the light. What people make of it is already there in their hearts and minds, based on fear and misunderstanding.

15. Favorite horror film and why?

Hmmm… I would say “Nosferatu, The Vampire” The Herzog/Kinski version is my favorite, the main reason being it’s overwhelming creepiness and dark, brooding production. Sure, it’s campy- but being Goth isn’t? The original is beautiful in its own dark way, too.
I did recently see the remake of “The Others” which quite swept me away.

16. Do you enjoy mincing about the house in Goth attire even if you’re alone? If so, what do you wear?

Yes, eyeliner mostly. “It makes me feel… pretty!” (haha!) Sometimes the leather trench coat needs to make an appearance on the front porch… that’s about it.

17. What sports do you watch or take part in? (Again, no judgment, c’mon!)

Okay, anyone who knows me knows I don’t understand the idea of sports or why people are interested in them. I just wanna know what the deal is all about. Tell me?

18. Ever dabble in the ‘dark arts’? Play with a Ouija Board? Séance? If so, what happened if anything?

Just the Ouija board… nothing happened. Boring…

19. Do you talk to the dead and if so, do the dead speak to you?
Yeah, I talk to ‘em… not sure if they talk back, but I hear grumbling sometimes.

20. Does DEATH freak you out or what is your reaction to it in general? Not speaking of personal loss, but when you are exposed to it in everyday experiences.

I feel it. It feels very close and looming to me, and still it feels comfortable, difficult to describe. It can be overwhelming sometimes just because you can feel discontent or trauma. For instance, if I drive by a fatal accident on the road I can totally feel it and know death is there- the crossing over, the tension and the chaos. The incident might affect me for some time, especially if I drive by the scene every day on my commute. Traumatic death reeks of deeds undone and feelings unexpressed.
Point: Express your feelings whenever appropriate or necessary.

21. How did you feel after taking this survey?

As fresh and pure as a Calla Lily on a freshly dug grave! –smirk- Your turn!

    1. What ’s your favorite, distinctively obvious Goth quote?

    <Azrael Abyss voice ON>"I feel DEAD!"<A.A. voice OFF>

    2. Is your Goth affinity more about music, fashion, mindset, or all of the above?

It's about the asthetic and the philosophy, and then about the music. I'm against the idea of fashion as a marker for one's philosophy, though to some certain extent I guess we can't help but wear ourselves on our sleeves.

    3. What was the first Goth song or band you ever identified with?

"St. Vitus Dance" by Bauhaus. I bought "In the Flat Field" on a whim used for two bucks without any clue as to who they were, and when I heard this song, it was so spastic/depressing/sexy/ugly, I fell for it and wanted more.

    4. What is your favorite Goth/Horror novel?

Does "Naked Lunch" count? It's pretty horrific, and it's my favorite.

    5. Is your Goth musik of choice more inclined towards Dance, Industrial, Ethereal, Ambient, Punk, Metal …?

I'm not an Amish Goth, so I don't really get into the hardcore advanced specialty bands...I think I have my own definition of what "goth" or "dark" music is to me - Diamanda, Swans, Bauhaus, Nick Cave - even some Residents and Johnny Cash can help decorate my dark spaces.

    6. If you ’re a guy, how many times have you sported eyeliner in the last month, just because? (Halloween not included!)
*If you ’re a girlfriend, what might you have sported to deviate from the ‘normal ’& effeminate?

I actually messed around with eyeliner the day after Halloween, because I forgot how pretty it made me, especially when I smear it down my cheeks like a post-telethon Tammy Faye.

    7. Do you own a pair of “Frankenstein ”, or elevator boots/shoes? How many pairs?

Broken ankle express, I fear...even when I was at my most costumegothiest, I sported snappy little Grace Jones elf boots.

    8. Do you consider yourself an Artist, or a f*ckin ’work of art?

    I don't know.

    9. Is Marilyn Manson a poseur, or a reflection on the state of our current existence?

    I think he's a Dungeons & Dragons enthusiast (w/ a great Bowie/Iggy/Alice collection) who made good.

    10. How many days of the week are you in full black attire?

It's one of those things I don't notice unless someone brings it up to me - weekends it's all about the black, though it doesn't feel like I'm gothing it up...just feels like "me".

    11. Is your Goth identity more about being unique, rebellious, fashionable, intentionally hideous (to be spiteful) comfortable, or perhaps a political or religious statement?

It's the path of least reisistence from the fucked-up-edness of my past to the fucked-up-edness of the present.

    12. Ever tried Absinthe? Fake Absinthe? Chartreuse?

Nah. Got some? Oh, wait...didn't you poison me with Chartreuse once? It was pretty. From what I remember.

    13. Are you a full-time or part-time Goth, or perhaps a Goth ‘in spirit ’? Maybe just into 'the scene"?

I don't know. I don't "identify" as anything, which is the only "lifestyle choice" I make. The commodification of goth in the nineties shoved my sensibilities even deeper inside.

    14. Do you think “Darkness ”is evil?

Gotta have the dark to know what light is.

    15. Favorite horror film and why?

My most recent favorite is "28 Days Later", except for the fact that they had absolutely no idea how to end it. Maybe it shouldn't have ended.

    16. Do you enjoy mincing about the house in Goth attire even if you ’re alone? If so, what do you wear?

I wear a fugue state, does that count?

    17. What sports do you watch or take part in? (Again, no judgment, c ’mon!)

Does computer solitaire count? Sometimes I play Minesweeper.

    18. Ever dabble in the ‘dark arts ’? Play with a Ouija Board? S éance? If so, what happened if anything?

I messed with Ouija a lot when I was a teen...I think it's all collective suggestive consciousness, but I suppose there's a use for that kind of channelling of energy.

These days, I just burn sage and commune with my intuition as much as I am allowed...that's as Pagan as I get anymore.

    19. Do you talk to the dead and if so, do the dead speak to you?

No, but the living speak to me.

    20. Does DEATH freak you out or what is your reaction to it in general? Not speaking of personal loss, but when you are exposed to it in everyday experiences.

The concept of death is alien to me - at 33, life has sheltered me from experiencing it on any substantial level. I can't answer this question yet.

    21. How did you feel after taking this survey?

    A little less crappy.

      1. What ’s your favorite, distinctively obvious Goth quote?

"Listen to them, the children of the night. What music THEY make..."

      2. Is your Goth affinity more about music, fashion, mindset, or all of the above?

      Music and mindset first!!!

      3. What was the first Goth song or band you ever identified with?

Joy Division, "Love Will Tear Us Apart". The birth of goth and they didn't have to wear make-up. And cool LP artwork.

      4. What is your favorite Goth/Horror novel?

The Haunting Of Hill House. Hell, ALL of Shirley Jackson's books.

      5. Is your Goth musik of choice more inclined towards Dance, Industrial, Ethereal, Ambient, Punk, Metal …?

mostly the early post-punk stuff.....I do have a weakness for 4AD stuff, though. Sisters did the goth-synth dance thing best.

      6. If you ’re a guy, how many times have you sported eyeliner in the last month, just because? (Halloween not included!)
*If you ’re a girlfriend, what might you have sported to deviate from the ‘normal ’& effeminate?

No eyeliner. I just enjoy bleaching my hair and getting tats.

      7. Do you own a pair of “Frankenstein ”, or elevator boots/shoes? How many pairs?

Yeah, got em in England....and some VERY high creepers.

      8. Do you consider yourself an Artist, or a f*ckin ’work of art?
      both?

      9. Is Marilyn Manson a poseur, or a reflection on the state of our current existence?

I don't even know if he even considers himself goth, I think of him as glam/metal.....but if some people think he's goth, why not? Who are we to judge who's a poseur or not? He's got a few good songs, which is more than I can say for many of the "purist" bands that just slavishly imitate Sisters & Bauhaus. This just brings up the question of what goth is, and if there are even any rules to be broken.

      10. How many days of the week are you in full black attire?

      probably 3 or 4.

      11. Is your Goth identity more about being unique, rebellious, fashionable, intentionally hideous (to be spiteful) comfortable, or perhaps a political or religious statement?

Like most music & sub-culture, it's about letting out what's inside in a positive, creative way. Relating to lyrics and imagery that make you feel less lonely in a mad world.

      12. Ever tried Absinthe? Fake Absinthe? Chartreuse?

      nope

      13. Are you a full-time or part-time Goth, or perhaps a Goth ‘in spirit ’? Maybe just into 'the scene"?

If I go out to hear music or dance, it will be a goth event. I love the scene and the fashion, but the music is the priority. I don't think you have to look a certain way to be an authentic goth.

      14. Do you think “Darkness ”is evil?

No, more like the mysterious & unknown.

      15. Favorite horror film and why?

Arrgghh. I'm gonna say "Let's Scare Jessica To Death". This portrait of a fragile young woman obsessed with death after the loss of her father who finds herself in a spooky small-town is just SUPERB.

      16. Do you enjoy mincing about the house in Goth attire even if you ’re alone? If so, what do you wear?

Well, my leather trousers, boots, no shirt....blasting Sisters.

      17. What sports do you watch or take part in? (Again, no judgment, c ’mon!)

      group masturbation

      18. Ever dabble in the ‘dark arts ’? Play with a Ouija Board? S éance? If so, what happened if anything?

      the Ouija board …nothing happened.

      19. Do you talk to the dead and if so, do the dead speak to you?
      nah
      20. Does DEATH freak you out or what is your reaction to it in general? Not speaking of personal loss, but when you are exposed to it in everyday experiences.

I love life, because it is so fleeting...it's like why love is so bitter-sweet...the fact that it will end. Right now, I don't wish to die, but I can imagine being so tired of it all you just want to stop living.

      21. How did you feel after taking this survey?

I want a slice of pie.

1 Fave Quote: " Sic Gorgiamos Allos Subjectatos Nunc; We Gladly Feast On those Who Would Subdue Us- Not just pretty words." Spoken by Morticia Addams to Uncle Fester in " the Addams Family" movie.

2 Goth -affinity for music, fashion or mindset: All three- the influences intertwined, as are Body, Mind and Spirit.

3 First goth song/ band: " Give It To Me" and "It's Been Hours Now" by Dead or Alive. Plus "Black Leather" by Ms Burns' former incarnation, Nightmares In Wax. Then anything from Dead Can Dance. Virginia Astley. The Creatures. Siousxie. Diamanda. Shelleyan Orphan. Too much love to name... but I digress.

4 Goth book: "Queen Of The Damned" by um, what's-her-name..?

5 Goth music classifications/ influences: Dance, Ethereal, Punk, World Music

6 Eyeliner frequency: I have it on right now. Usually black, but sometimes blue or dark coffee brown. The eyes are the mirrors of the soul... frame them. I do have limits, though. I never wear both nail polish & eyeliner simultaneously. I like a simpler look.

7 "Frankenpumps", as my beloved Marquis calls them: Nope. I walk in flats- from classic b&w Chucks to steel-toe boots. I've worn the heels, but now I go strictly for comfort. Practicality wins out...

8 Artist or a work of fuckkin art: Both. I interpret the beauty and ugliness of the word I experience, and my personhood is decorated as an individual act of expression.

9 Marilyn: She's fabulous, though I'm not much drawn to her music. I love her versatiltiy, example in "Party Monster"

10 Black days of the week: About half the week. The rest I have at least one article of black to bring the whole ensemble together.

11 Goth fashion decision- reasons: Comfort and versatility. I can dress it up or fuck it up. Either way is fabulous.

12 Absinthe, etc: Nope. I'd try Absinthe though. I really love Elderberry Wine, "the finest drink under Heav'n" Otherwise I'm a Chambourd, Amaretto, Carolan's kinda guy. Or rich red wine...

13 subtly full-time Goth: I do this more for me than for anyone else. So I may not be immediately pegged as "Goth" by some people. That's alright. To eat his own. Or is that to 'each'...?

14 Darkness= Evil???: NO. "Angels to some, Demons to others." It's all a matter of perspective. A wolf is not evil for his hunger or his stealthy kill of a young fawn. It is only to ourselves that we can even begin to ascribe such judgments. Darkness is sometimes quiet and
restful, sometimes frantic and hopeless. And sometimes just achingly beautiful.

15 Fave movie: probably "The Hunger" Although "Eyes Of Fire" is a close second...

16 Mincing at home: daily, Daaahhhling! It's all drag, after all.

17 Sports? Like as in "water sports" ??? Je ne comprend pas. : I like watching swimming& diving, some track& field, and gymnastics. I'm a former dancer- does that count as athletic?

18 "...Dark Arts"?: Oh honey, too much on that for one posting. Let's just say I'm comfortable with the theory that magick is NOT sleight-
    of-hand.

19 Deathly thoughts: Death is as natural as Life. One cannot exist without the other. I like the Buddhist notion of "dying a little bit each day". The grounding philosophy that acceptance of this factual experience can remove suffering by removing fear and resistance. What if slipping from the consciousness of "life" to that of "death" is as available to us as the sliding from "awake" into "sleep"? I hope I meet my Death with peace and understanding.

20 How do I feel?: Sharp enough to split a hare!
