The only rules are: there are no wrong answers, and don’t slam your compatriots for their individuality.

1. What’s your favorite, distinctively obvious Goth quote?

"Anybody got a clove? I hate my parents, too."

2. Is your Goth affinity more about music, fashion, mindset, or all of the above?

All of the above. The mindset begat the others, and the music met the mindset and the fashion took its own course.

3. What was the first Goth song or band you ever identified with?

I think it was "Blue Water" by Fields of the Nephilim, maybe "Something Inside Me Has Died" by Kommunity FK, I can't remember. I was more into ‘noise’ back then. I liked The Sisters and The Cure, but it didn’t grab me as Goth back then. It was pop.

4. What is your favorite Goth/Horror novel?

"Drawing Blood" by Poppy Z Brite. Sure it's pulp, but it's gay-goth pulp. So I’m shallow…

5. Is your Goth musik of choice more inclined towards Dance, Industrial, Ethereal, Ambient, Punk, Metal…?

I like them all, depending how much fight has been beaten out of me in a given day. If I’m angry, it’s Punk or Metal, if I’m totally deceased it’s Ethereal, if it’s good times it’s anything with a beat.

6. If you’re a guy, how many times have you sported eyeliner in the last month, just because? (Halloween not included!)
*If you’re a girlfriend, what might you have sported to deviate from the ‘normal’ & effeminate?

At least 3-4 times each month I put on the eyeliner when I need an escape to the surrealism that is my tortured existence (oh, the drama!) Hey, it helps- and I don’t even need to see it- just enough to know it’s there.

7. Do you own a pair of “Frankenstein”, or elevator boots/shoes? How many pairs?

Yep, 1 pair. Great therapy.

8. Do you consider yourself an Artist, or a f*ckin’ work of art?
An artist of sorts, a work of art in the making, or rotting... not sure about that.

9. Is Marilyn Manson a poseur, or a reflection on the state of our current existence?

The poor dear, he doesn't even know how funny he is- but he has no need to care! I think he brought some great truths to light, and I think he is insightful, intelligent, though not very well grounded. He claims to be a staunch Republican. Yes, I heard him say it- it's true. I think that deep down there is an insane conscience at work. Time will tell.

10. How many days of the week are you in full black attire?

I wear black each and every day. The mutants at work get used to it. Eventually they stop asking stupid questions.

11. Is your Goth identity more about being unique, rebellious, fashionable, intentionally hideous (to be spiteful) comfortable, or perhaps a political or religious statement?

All of the above! I never chose this lifestyle, it chose ME. I am only being true to myself, and that’s pure, Baby! Okay, so I don’t subscribe to any ‘set of values’, really. That would be too constricting.

12. Ever tried Absinthe? Fake Absinthe? Chartreuse?

I’m very fond of Chartreuse, never tried the others or had the opportunity to.

13. Are you a full-time or part-time Goth, or perhaps a Goth ‘in spirit’? Maybe just into 'the scene"?

I’m a somewhat covert, yet full-time Goth. That is, I may be subtle but the ‘gothness’ is always evident in mindset and attire.

14. Do you think “Darkness” is evil?

No, but I think the idea of ‘darkness’ can be made to be evil. Darkness exists without intention in nature; I’m just drawn to it. I seek balance between the dark and the light. What people make of it is already there in their hearts and minds, based on fear and misunderstanding.

15. Favorite horror film and why?

Hmmm… I would say “Nosferatu, The Vampire” The Herzog/Kinski version is my favorite, the main reason being it’s overwhelming creepiness and dark, brooding production. Sure, it’s campy- but being Goth isn’t? The original is beautiful in its own dark way, too.
I did recently see the remake of “The Others” which quite swept me away.

16. Do you enjoy mincing about the house in Goth attire even if you’re alone? If so, what do you wear?

Yes, eyeliner mostly. “It makes me feel… pretty!” (haha!) Sometimes the leather trench coat needs to make an appearance on the front porch… that’s about it.

17. What sports do you watch or take part in? (Again, no judgment, c’mon!)

Okay, anyone who knows me knows I don’t understand the idea of sports or why people are interested in them. I just wanna know what the deal is all about. Tell me?

18. Ever dabble in the ‘dark arts’? Play with a Ouija Board? Séance? If so, what happened if anything?

Just the Ouija board… nothing happened. Boring…

19. Do you talk to the dead and if so, do the dead speak to you?
Yeah, I talk to ‘em… not sure if they talk back, but I hear grumbling sometimes.

20. Does DEATH freak you out or what is your reaction to it in general? Not speaking of personal loss, but when you are exposed to it in everyday experiences.

I feel it. It feels very close and looming to me, and still it feels comfortable, difficult to describe. It can be overwhelming sometimes just because you can feel discontent or trauma. For instance, if I drive by a fatal accident on the road I can totally feel it and know death is there- the crossing over, the tension and the chaos. The incident might affect me for some time, especially if I drive by the scene every day on my commute. Traumatic death reeks of deeds undone and feelings unexpressed.
Point: Express your feelings whenever appropriate or necessary.

21. How did you feel after taking this survey?

So I've been renting lots of films lately, hanging at home with my dog. Most were just abyssmaly bad. For instance:
Darkness Falls. What a shitshow. Totally cheesed out ending, and dodgy "suspense" to get to it.
The Marsh? Pu-leeez. Inane resolution to the too- convoluted plot lines.
The Return? I wanted to return IT, for a refund on my wasted time. Fucker dragged on and on!
But there was one that I really liked.Got me so creeped out I was jumping at my own reflection, in my own house!!! I even checked under my bed before turning in for the night! Yay, cuz I loved to be that flipped out. It's just rare to be so moved, in the excess of crappily made genre films. So what was this shining opposite? Dead Silent.
Not a perfect film, but there was so much more of a classic, old-school feel to it. Great sets, lighting and I loved-loved-loved the make-up effects. (Plus I have a low creep-out factor for dummies, dolls and puppets, and there were several of them.) The character make-up on the main baddie was so good, I was watching it frame by frame just to see her! Anyway, just wanted to share that with yaz. Peace, love and stir-fried toddlers to ya!

Gay Goth Anthems?

I know of some homo punk songs about being gay (the only good one is "I Kill Everything I Fuck!" Ha!) but I can't think of any real gay goth songs. "Black Leather" by Nightmares in Wax might be the only gay goth song I can think of, and that's not really goth I guess, there's just something about Pete Burns that always seemed pretty goth to me. Are there any others?

This was in part inspired by the moderator's post in which a comment mentioned Gypsy 83.

Frankly, if you thought that movie was worth all the digital technology that went into it by creating copies of it, you couldn't be more of a tool. Anyone who knows a good movie when they see one could spot that movie a mile away as a bona fide piece of trash. I found it immensely interesting before I actually saw the movie (mostly because of the gay sex scene, I'll admit, and because whats-his-face-in-badly-done-makeup was really attractive, I grant you), and once I saw it, i really could not have regretted answering the trivia question that won me the stupid thing.
Firstly, It was about two goths' obsessions with Stevie Nicks. This strikes me as somewhat weird seeing as how I'm the only goth I ever met who was in love with Nicks before that movie became the new "thing" to love. That Sarah Rue chick looked, dressed, and sounded absolutely nothing like the woman (who is a goddess that that B-list actor could never aspire to be, let alone match), and it seemed like her entire character was revolved around the fact that she was fat.
They cried every 15 goddamn seconds and couldn't act to save their lives. Hey guys - Goths really aren't all that melancholy. Only when we're drunk, and even then, you'd be more likely to find us merrily dancing along to And One's "Wasted" than crying about whatever the fuck woes us this minute.

The subplots, if you could call them that, were weak and typical. Gay guy gets straight frat boy drunk (on Absinthe, no less!) and has his way with him (isn't that all of our fantasies, really?) just to be shit on. Big damn surprise. Fat chick (with tits bigger than me) falls in love with Amish married boy and gets dumped again... okay, not so typical, but still fucking weird.

But worst of all, it portrayed goths mostly as melancholy hopeless cases who cry too much. Not something I'd be proud of, you?

Oh, and they didn't even have the decency to include any actual goth music in the soundtrack.
No kids, The Cure isn't goth. They had one goth album. Lets let good pop be good pop, okay?

Anyone who likes that movie, I'd be very interested in selling you my copy for .000001 cent plus the cost of shipping. Thank you.

I have to admit its been my not-so-secret dream to work with Elvira someday and I just can't believe that it's about to come true- beginning next weekend! It's fairly obvious that I adore her. Homophobic Police Assault In Santa Cruz

The following is a letter of protest sent to the Santa Cruz City Council for the police assault of Shane (Tammy) Maxfield.

Santa Cruz City Council,

I am writing to protest the assault and false arrest carried out against Shane (Tammy) Maxfield by Santa Cruz Police Officer Brierly. A description of that arrest from an eyewitness follows this letter.

You as the City Council are the boss of the police and hold direct responsibility for the outrageous violations of civil liberties that are routinely carried out by your police department.

Yours is a police a department that has been successfully sued for its violations of free speech rights, a department that has violently broken up a protest against the war in Yugoslavia, a department that purposely targets activists for harassment, brutality and false arrests, a department that murdered activist John Dine in cold blood, a department that has been caught spying on and infiltrating anti-war organizations, a department that purposely targets the poorest of the poor for harassment, brutality and false arrests under the direct orders of the anti-homeless laws that you as a City Council have passed, a police department that targeted the Blue Lagoon, a gay bar, for special homophobic treatment eventually costing the City in a settlement of well over a million dollars.

The homophobic hate crime that Officer Brierly has now carried out against Shane (Tammy) Maxfield is just one in a long list of crimes carried out by your police department. Your encouragement of past crimes has led directly to this most recent one. The Santa Cruz Police department is sending out a strong message that Santa Cruz is not safe for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender community and that the City no longer wants their tourism dollars.

I demand that Officer Brierly be immediately fired from the police force for his hate crime against Shane (Tammy) Maxfield and that Officer Brierly be jailed on the charge of felony assault for his criminal violence and reckless endangerment of the life of a person suffering with HIV/AIDS.

I am a witness in the case of Shane(Tammy) Maxfield, case #065-04163. Shane was handcuffed and forced to sit down against the chainlink fence on Pacific Ave/Church for "directing traffic." He was actually helping a friend and another witness, David Bliss jump David's battery to move his van out of the handicapped space.

The officer refused to give me his name and badge number. I begged him twice not to arrest Shane as he is severely ill with AIDS and has just started a dibilitating HIV cocktail of Trevada and Sustiva. He laughed at me and said "That's not gonna happen." I told him Shane might die of stress in jail and he guffawed and shrugged me off.

It was apparent the officer realized he hadn't charged Shane with anything yet as he pulled Shane up by his coat, slammed him against the fence and forced the top of Shane's head to barely touch him. He said: "Now I've got you for battery." This was in full public view of at least 40 witnesses at 1 PM on April 25,2006. Before the sergeant could take stories from witnesses Shane was put in the police car and taken to jail. His arraignment is May 15, 2006. The jail personnel were sympathetic and thought the whole incident ridiculous.

It is a travesty of justice to allow a police officer with NO communication skills arrest a severely ill man for helping a friend (the van was already jumped and ready to go when the arresting officer on the beat got there) This officer should be removed from the police force as he is nothing more than a thug in a uniform. He is guilty of police brutality, false arrest and battery upon Shane not the other way around.

A friend of a friend, Heather, was beaten up in the streets by a boy this weekend during the Convergence 12 festival. He fled Louisiana (not a rumor, I know this is true since I was around) and is now "on the run" so to speak. If any of you see him, please contact the NOLA police dept immediately (details below).

I don't think anything pisses me off more than abusive men. Please repost & spread the word!

One of the happiest moments of my life....

I wanted to share a little something that touched me very, very deeply. Last night, at Spin THIS! ( a monthly event I help run), I booked one of my friends, Nol, to perform. He is a ballerina and dressed in drag, wearing a wedding dress. His boyfriend came up to me and asked me how perfect would it be/not be for him to propose to Nol on stage- the fact that Nol was in the gown, cute girls dressed as fairies also performing, being at Nol's favorite club (a very eclectic crowd that comes together in harmony), the fact they have been "talking about it", the fact he brought a ring for such a purpose etc.... And if I thought it was perfect, could I help arrange it?
Well, DUH! Of course! Aside from being incredibly flattered that someone considered the event the "perfect place", I try to do anything within my power to make dreams come true for people I care about. I drag him to
Phreaki Boi/ Murias (my lifetime partner in crime and one of the main promoters) and passed on the request. We arranged timing and cues. I was asked by the groom if I could have the fairies on the stage at the same time. Of course, they were game! They got on stage and started dancing. I go up to Nol and ask him if he could go up and dance with them. Oberon gently nudged, "yeah! Go up and dance with fairies! That would be awesome!".
They dance and play and the music stops at the end of the song. Nol is clueless as to what is about to happen. Oberon waltzes on stage and starts talking like he was one of the promoters thanking everyone for coming out, introducing the performers, etc. He mentions Nol is his boyfriend and soulmate. He gets down on one knee and pops the big question. Nol, while being completely surprised, says yes! They kiss and the crowd goes wild!!!!! Cheers and shouts of congrats, tears of happiness and amazement. It was one of the most beautiful moments of my life. I was so happy to see two men announcing their love and goal to spend the rest of their life together was so accepted by the mixed crowd. It was so perfect and very precious. People should not be afraid to show their love to the world, regardless of orientation. LOVE should be celebrated! I could not stop crying. I was a happy, mushy wreak. And when the bride and I hugged after, it was all over! Our tears were not the only ones. A lot of folks were moved. I even woke up crying tears of happiness from witnessing such a beautiful moment between 2 people. Hell, I'm even crying now as I write this! I am so eager for the day where it is socially (and legally) accepted everywhere for EVERYONE to marry the love of their life! I hope to see it my lifetime.

Horror for Halloween

Since it's Halloween soon, I think everyone should post their
Top 20 or so fav horror movies that maybe not everyone has
seen. Here's my lucky 13:

1. THE VANISHING (more a psych thriller, but those Dutch
are so damn weird--guy obsessed with his girlfriend's
disappearance who goes after her abductor, has maybe THE
most disturbing ending ever. NOT the Kiefer Sutherland/Jeff
Bridges re-make!).

2. THE COLLECTOR (Terence Stamp collects butterflys...and
um, young women. Awesome. A still was used on a Smiths B-
side sleeve, and perhaps was also the inspiration for that Paul
Weller song--can you get cooler than that?).

3. SUSPIRIA (unbelievably shot with everything candy-colored
and all dripping and gooey can't mask how ridiculously
unnerving this girl-who-goes-to-dance-school-but-it's-actually-
a-witches-coven fairy tale actually is--your spine will literally
tingle).

4. THE TENANT (the OTHER Polanski horror film, maybe the
creepiest film I've ever seen, with an apartment tenant, played
by Roman himself, who becomes obsessed with a former
occupant's suicide. Isabelle Adjani looks like she just got off
the L train from Williamsburg).

5. THE CHANGELING (cause I've seen the Shining so many
times, this is the 2nd scariest haunted house flick, and
George C. Scott is just so good it makes it that much more
real. This kept the torch blazing for horror cinema's continued
love of...terrifying dead children!)

6. EYES WITHOUT A FACE (underground, cultish classic
about a surgeon whose disfigured daughter moves him to lure
unwitting girls into his lair so he can...you know...take their
faces. It's also kinda gorgeous, in b&w).

7. THE FOG (the original one, John Carpenter at his finest,
sleepy town gets invaded by killer maritime ghosts, even has
some camp value, the climax happens in the town church of
course, and you gotta love the whole seaside setting--at any
given moment someone could be about to share shark attack
stories).

8. FRIGHT NIGHT (Jesus Christ this movie is so awesome,
it's so damn funny, unintentionally of course, not really scary
at all but it'll keep you laughing and laughing all night and
through the next day--Chris Sarandon should have won an
Oscar as this annoyed but virile little vampire--a classic!).

9. DEAD OF WINTER (I feel guilty recommending this cause I
almost want to keep it to myself, but you can guess what
happens when a struggling NYC actress gets lured to a big
mansion in the icy countryside to make a "film").

10. ALUCARDA (OK, just see it so I know for sure I didn't
hallucinate it or anything).

11. DON'T LOOK NOW (bereaved couple wind up in Venice.
There's a slasher on the loose. Donald Sutherland is seeing
things. Julie Christie is having sexual issues--people still
debate just what the hell is going on here).

12. DAWN OF THE DEAD (the original. one of the best true
zombie films--from Romero himself. yea, they all walk way too
funny to actually pose a tagreting problem, and this weird
synth score keeps popping in at random moments, but it's so
fun watching people indefinitely trapped in a mall while all
these things roam around eating the living).

12. PLAY MISTY FOR ME (back when Clint Eastwood used
to direct GOOD movies. He plays a radio DJ in beautiful
Monterey who gets stalked by the mother from ARRESTED
DEVELOPMENT--but certainly not because of the crap he
plays on the radio! Seriously, this chick knows how to wield a
knife, and makes Glenn Close look like Laura Bush).
